Medical students and foundation doctors can join the British Hip Society for free.

Free membership is a simple way to become part of the BHS community early in your career. Whether you are already considering a career in trauma & orthopaedics or are simply interested in finding out more, we would be delighted to welcome you. BHS Medical Student Elective Bursary

The BHS Medical Student Elective Bursary supports students undertaking high-quality electives with an orthopaedic focus, in the UK or abroad.

Applications are now open for the British Hip Society's Medical Student Elective Bursary for the 2026/27 academic year.

Two bursaries of £750 are available towards travel, accommodation or project expenses. Successful applicants will be invited to the Annual Meeting to present their elective experience.

Who can apply? All current UK medical students with a demonstrated interest in orthopaedics undertaking their formal elective as part of the MBBS curriculum, in the 2026/27 academic year.

Medical Student & Foundation Doctor Day at the BHS Annual Scientific Meeting

Every year, the BHS Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) includes a dedicated stream for medical students and foundation doctors — Future Hip Surgeons, delivered in partnership with BOMFA.

What can you expect?

  • Hands-on high-fidelity surgical workshops
  • Expert-led teaching and talks across the field, with career sessions on portfolio building and applying to T&O training
  • A friendly setting to meet, network and learn from hip surgeons at all stages, from trainees to consultants

Looking for mentorship, teaching and events?

Medical students and foundation doctors can also join the British Orthopaedic Medical Students and Foundation Doctors Association (BOMFA), the national student-led T&O organisation affiliated with the BOA and BOTA. BOMFA provides year-round support, including:

  • A national mentorship scheme pairing students and foundation doctors with orthopaedic surgeons
  • National and regional events, workshops and teaching across the T&O subspecialties
  • Career guidance, research opportunities and a community of aspiring orthopaedic surgeons
