  • Further details:

The Northumbria Revision Arthroplasty Fellowship exposes the fellow to a large volume of arthroplasty revision procedures. You will experience a large variety of revision arthroplasty cases of both hip and knee, working for 2 different lead consultants for six month attachments.

A key aspect of the post is the weekly ‘Revision’ List, a list shared by the five revision consultants mentioned above. This is a core aspect of the fellowship, and exposes the fellow to a range of complex cases, and a chance to work with all five of our highly experienced surgeons.

With a focus on operative experience there is also opportunity to finesse decision making and outpatient assessment of complex cases through not only the consultant’s specialist clinics, but also the weekly MDT and complex / revision clinic. Northumbria has a developed MDT and Bone Infection Unit, both of which the fellow plays an active part in. MDT management is a mainstay of modern management of the revision arthroplasty patient, and the fellow plays a key role in organisation and running of the meetings.

There is no out of hours or on call commitment to the post, in order to maximise elective exposure, but the fellow will be involved in daytime weekly trauma lists with their allocated consultant. These lists contain general trauma but also inevitably a proportion of acute complex primary and revision arthroplasty eg. Peri-prosthetic fracture cases.

Northumbria Orthopaedics is renowned for its quality improvement work, and as a BOA Leadership Fellowship the fellow will complete the BOA Leadership programme, which includes a quality improvement project. With an active research interest in the department, fellows will be expected to contribute to one or more research projects, and engage with clinical audit or its supervision.

Overall the Northumbria Revision Fellowship offers an interested trainee a chance to hone clinical and surgical skills, and work alongside a respected and nationally regarded faculty, in preparation for a career in Revision Arthroplasty Surgery.
