Dear Colleagues,

The British Hip Society (BHS) and Orthopaedic Research UK (ORUK) are offering a full-time, 2-year research fellowship of up to £120k, to start by no later than August 2027. Deadline Friday 1st May 2026.

The focus of this year’s BHS/ORUK Research Fellowship is to invite researchers to develop applications that are aligned with the missions of the society “to promote the very best care for patients with hip related conditions”. In particular, we welcome applications that address this year’s presidential theme of sustainability in hip surgery.

Eligibility:

  • The successful candidate will be expected to register for study towards a higher degree (MD, PhD, DPhil or equivalent) from a UK University. This will require a leave of absence from clinical roles and / or training with agreement of employers or training programme directors.
  • The Fellowship will be open exclusively to BHS members, and at least one proposed supervisor for the research project must also be a BHS member.

Applicants may choose whether the award is taken on a salary or stipend basis and whether it is full-time or less than full-time (LTFT), with a minimum of 0.5 full-time equivalent (FTE).

Application process:

  1. Applications will be a single stage process closing by 17:00 on Friday 1 May 2026.
  2. External Expert Review will take place between 5 May – 15 June 2026.
  3. Shortlisted applications following the review of the BHS/ORUK Selection Panel will be notified by mid-July 2026
  4. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed at the British Orthopaedic Association Annual Congress between 22-24 September 2026.
  5. Award decisions will be received as soon as practicable after the interviews.
  6. The fellowship must start no later than August 2027.

The successful applicant will work closely with the ORUK Research Committee and the BHS Executive committee to ensure the goals and outputs of the research align with these requirements.
